Derek was a unique and most decent human being. Time spent in his company was uplifting and infectious and you always came away feeling lighter for it. He never took life nor rules too seriously, he had a wicked sense of humour on tap, a gift for story telling, boundless kindness, creativity, curiosity, generosity of spirit and strength of character. This all packaged in one person is a truly rare find - a gift and inspiration to those of us who were privileged to know him. He is quite simply unforgettable. I would like to imagine that he is in some kind of alternative jazz 'heaven' sat at a piano, tinkering, with a pint, a twinkle in his eye, and more wild stories to tell.
